Equipment Needs

Equipment needs in family football are minimal. But they are also specific and should be adhered to fully to have a successful football game. Required equipment for family football can be divided into two categories. First, there are the game requirements.  And second, there are the player requirements. This article addresses both needs.

1 – Game Requirements. For a successful family football fun game there are four basic equipment requirements – a good football, a reliable air pump with an inflating needle, a serviceable ball repair kit and a workable nylon tote bag. The football should ideally be  a leather or composite football and there should be at least two of them. One ball is a back up. The air pump can be hand or foot operated and should also be equipped with an inflating needle. The ball repair kit is required in case the footballs are damaged and need repair. All these items can be easily carried in a nylon ball tote bag.

It is important that all the required game equipment be in good working order. The footballs should be undamaged and properly inflated. The air pump and inflating needle should also be in good repair and work as designed. The same is true of the ball repair kit and the nylon tote bag. While the equipment like an official football does not have to be new it should be in good repair and usable for a football game.

2 – Player Requirements. The equipment requirements for players are few. Each player needs to wear a good pair of unworn sneakers. These need not have cleats on them but they should be in good condition. Worn sneakers provide little or no traction and can even lead to foot injuries. In addition, all players should wear jeans or shorts and a properly fitted jersey. Again, these items should be in good repair. They do not have to be new but they also should not be old or torn. There is no place in family football for the “tattered look”. While family football is not professional it should  be acceptable.

Family football does not require any type of football gear like pads, helmets or even shoes. It can easily be played without any type of football clothing. But, game items like footballs and ball pumps are essential; clothing is not. Playing  with family footballs should be fun and wearing football gear does not necessarily accomplish this objective.

Family football requires little equipment to be football fun. Just meet the minimum of game and player equipment and all players and spectators will enjoy the game and play football for family fun.
