The key to effective play in family football is fitness. The best players are those who are in good physical condition. Fitness is an important requirement for anyone who wishes to excel at family football. What does fitness mean? It consists of three key characteristics: (1) aerobic health, (2) body strength, and (3) personal quickness. Each of these will be developed further here along with a look at good football equipment.

Aerobic health is fundamental in family football. This game requires a lot of running. Therefore, being able to maintain a good running profile requires excellent aerobic fitness. This is characterized by a body that receives regular aerobic training and does not smoke. Smoking is a bane on any type of healthy lungs that are required for good aerobic fitness. So don’t smoke and exercise your body aerobically on a regular basis. In this way you can compete effectively in a family football game that requires extensive running all the time.

In addition to aerobic fitness you must also develop body strength. Family football requires both line and some down field blocking. If you are not strong enough you cannot be an effective blocker. So don’t just concentrate on aerobic fitness. Use weights to ensure that you are also physically strong as well. You do not have to have big muscles. But you do need to work your muscles and exercise your body to be totally physically fit. In this way you are not reluctant to block an aggressive defensive player. Good body strength can be achieved by a regular program of weight training. So don’t neglect building up your body!

As you work on aerobic and strength fitness do no overlook the need to be quick in family football. This quickness is required on both offense and defense. Family football is a fast moving game. So to play it well requires effective quickness on both sides of the ball. On offense quickness is demonstrated on long pass plays and elusive runs. On defense quickness is required when rushing the quarterback and stopping running backs or pass-catching players. The best family football players demonstrate personal quickness on every play. They achieve this capability by working on it like any other football skill.

Good equipment always helps. This consists of an official football, quality accessories and a proven tote bag. The best football is the official NFL football covered on top grain leather. This all leather football plays well under all conditions and can be a Rawlings football, a Spalding football or a Wilson football. The next most playable football is the leather and rubber composite football. It can be an Olympia football or a Rawlings football. The rubber football is the least playable and least expensive. Casual players prefer the rubber football because of its low cost. It can be a Baden football, a Champion football, a Mikasa football or an Olympia football.

Using the best possible accessories is a must. These include a football pump, pressure gauge, inflating needles and a football repair kit. The ball pump can be a hand operated air pump or the more expensive foot pump. Without good accessories readily available a family football game may have to be halted if football damage occurs.

Another important accessory is the ball bag or ball tote. It is made of nylon mesh, comes in a variety of colors and has a nylon draw string. This nylon ball bag or nylon ball tote can accommodate up to 10 footballs. It is used to transport football equipment to and from games and to protect unused equipment from theft at these games. Don’t forget to have a good tote bag!

Staying fit for family football is a must. Don’t overlook the need for aerobic fitness, good strength and personal quickness. These attributes produce a very capable family football player!
