Offense

An effective offense is critical in family (or any) football. It never takes second place to the defense since offensive play is very exciting to both play and watch. In family football, much of the offense is passing since it is easiest to do and can be most effective. There is some running but this particular offensive action depends on having an excellent runner, which few family teams have. This article looks at the family football offense. In particular it examines passing, running and kicking. It also reviews the required football equipment.

In family football passing is the preferred offensive weapon for three reasons. First, most family football teams have a reasonable passer since this is a skill that can be most easily perfected. Second, many family football teams work hard at perfecting their pass plays and so know how to make them work in a game. And third, many family football teams have several good pass catchers who can make pass plays work. An effective passing offense is something that every good family football team strives to have. There are three basic pass plays – short (up to 10 yards), intermediate (11 to 20 yards) and long (over 20 yards). These can go in one of three directions – left, right or center. There is also the draw play. However, the success of any passing play depends on a good passer, capable receivers and a strong blocking line.

The running play tends to be downplayed in family football since many teams do not have good runners. Also, gaining yardage or scoring touchdowns with running plays is difficult to do. As a result, running plays tend to be used much less frequently in family football. If a family team has a good runner that player will be used often to compliment the expected passing attack. Having a good runner means that a team’s passing attack can be much more effective. Running the football can be used creatively to ensure a balanced offensive attack.

Kicking in family football is almost a lost art. If there are no goal posts on the playing field then the only kicking that’s done is on fourth down. Further, there are few good kickers in family football. So even fourth down plays may not see much effective kicking. However, having a fake kick is the offensive play arsenal is good game strategy. So, don’t overlook the kick in family football.

Good equipment always helps. This includes an official football, quality accessories and a sturdy tote bag. The best football is the official NFL football covered in top grain leather. This all leather football can be a Rawlings football, a Spalding football or a Wilson football. The next most attractive football is the leather and rubber composite football. It plays well and can be an Olympia football or a Rawlings football. The least playable but least expensive football is the rubber football. It is preferred by casual players due to its low cost. It can be a Baden football, a Champion football, a Mikasa football or an Olympia football.

Good accessories are always needed. They are a football pump, pressure gauge, inflating needles and a football repair kit. The ball pump can be a hand operated air pump or the more expensive foot pump. Regardless, do not skimp on quality accessories!

The ball bag or ball tote is another very useful accessory. It is made of nylon mesh and comes in many colors. This nylon ball bag or ball tote usually has a nylon draw string and can accommodate up to 10 footballs. It is invaluable at carrying football equipment to and from games and protecting unused equipment from theft at these games. The tote bag is a very useful accessory!

Offense is king in family football. Most teams use the pass a lot and the run only sparingly. However, to be effective in family football offense, a team must have a good quarterback, elusive pass receivers and a solid blocking line.
